Tonka Bean
Dipteryx odorata
Orally, tonka bean is used as a tonic, an aphrodisiac, to treat cachexia, cramps, lymphedema, nausea, cough, schistosomiasis, spasms, and tuberculosis. Topically, tonka bean is used for mouth ulcers, earache, and sore throat. In manufacturing, coumarin, one of the active constituents of tonka bean, is used as a flavoring and fragrance in various products in the food, liquor, tobacco, soap, and cosmetic industries. In foods, the seeds are used to make a nutty-flavored beverage.
