Description:

In small doses it was used as a tonic, increasing secretion. In large doses a nauseant, reducing pulse, and acting as an expectorant if medical dose is exceeded. It sometimes produces emesis, oftener burning in the stomach, vertigo, impaired vision, alarming prostration etc. chiefly employed as a stimulant expectorant in bronchitis, croup, and asthma.
